He later published a biography of Bryant (1883) and edited his works (4 vol., 1883-84). He retained his connection with the Post for nearly 45 years, following Bryant as editor in 1878, but because of differences with the owners, he resigned in 1881 and became editor of the Commercial Advertiser. Godwin, sympathetic with Brook Farm and with Fourierism Fourier, wrote 'A Popular View of the Doctrines of Fourier' (1844), and for a time edited the Harbinger, the Fourierist magazine. He translated part of Goethe's autobiography (1846-47) and other works from the German." Add to basketLeather. Condition: Very Good. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. The Ninth edition. Volume II (ANA -ATH) only. A Very Good copy. 4to., 832 pp., illustrated with numerous engravings, drawings and inserted plates. Bound in full leather with title and volume on separate morocco labels on the spine. All edges and end papers marbled. The boards are edge worn, with tips rubbed, with wear and light soiling. Missing the volume label on spine. The text block is clean and bright. A Very Good copy. ***The landmark ninth edition, often called "the Scholar's Edition", was published from January 1875 to 1889 in 25 volumes, with volume 25 the index volume. Unlike the first two Black editions, there were no preliminary dissertations, the alphabetical listing beginning in volume 1. Up to 1880, the editor, and author of the Foreword, was Thomas Spencer Baynes -the first English-born editor after a series of Scots - and W. Robertson Smith afterwards. Compared to the 8th edition, the 9th was far more luxurious, with thick boards and high-quality leather bindings, premier paper, and a production which took full advantage of the technological advances in printing in the years between the 1850s and 1870s. Great use was made of the new ability to print large graphic illustrations on the same pages as the text, as opposed to limiting illustrations to separate copperplates. The 9th edition was a critical success, and roughly 8,500 sets were sold in Britain, and upwards of 45,000 sets in the US from authorized publisher's Charles Scribner's Sons, Little, Brown, and Samuel Hall. The British and American publications were identical, except for the title pages.- paraphrased from wiki. ***.…

With a notice of Spencer's "New System of Philosophy". 12mo. Bright blue cloth binding, elaborately blindstamped, gold titles with decoration, top edge gilt. Antique ex-library purchased from the historical collection of one of the USA's oldest libraries and bearing a hand-numbered (1157) and hand-dated (May 1, 1869) bookplate. 451 pp. followed by prospectus for subscription to Spencer's philosophical works (10 pp., including a list of subscribers with their city and state), and 6 pp. of advertising. "Herbert Spencer (1820-1903) British philosopher and sociologist, was a major figure in the intellectual life of the Victorian era. He was one of the principal proponents of evolutionary theory in the mid nineteenth century, and his reputation at the time rivaled that of Charles Darwin. Spencer was initially best known for developing and applying evolutionary theory to philosophy, psychology and the study of society -- what he called his "synthetic philosophy" (see his A System of Synthetic Philosophy, 1862-93). Today, however, he is usually remembered in philosophical circles for his political thought, primarily for his defense of natural rights and for criticisms of utilitarian positivism." (Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy). This book contains the American notice of the "new system of philosophy". That is followed by the editor's preface. The book is a series of essays first published in English periodicals, mainly around the subject of Evolution. An early edition of a very important book. Chipping to top and bottom of spine, spine faded (but legible), gilt faded, front hinge open, watermarks on about 1/3 of the pages. Light foxing.
