Très rare extrait du monumental diction…naire encyclopédique de Dechambre. Cet article a été rédigé par Eugène Pierre Spillmann (1833-1883), chirurgien militaire, professeur agrégé au Val-de-Grâce. Spillmann est l'auteur de nombreuses publications (dont le monumental Arsenal de chirurgie contemporaine, rédigé avec Gaujot). Cet article constitue une monographie très documentée. Pour Spillman (comme pour Sédillot) une résection est une excision d'une partie vivante du squelette. Spillmann englobe ainsi dans les résections, la trépanation des os, la rugination, l'évidement, l'ablation totale ou partielle des os soit dans le sens longitudinal, soit dans le sens transversal, soit aux dépens de la continuité, soit aux dépens des extrémités articulaires. Il faut signaler l'existence d'un historique intéressant. Spillmann se montre très partisan des méthodes conservatrices en chirurgie de guerre, et préfère les résections médiates et secondaires à l'amputation quand il n'existe pas de contre-indication. La bibliographie occupe les pages 522-526. Première et seule édition du t…ome 2 de cet ouvrage monumental et particulièrement précieux (il est très rare complet des deux volumes, ceux-ci ayant parus à 5 ans d'intervalle). Il s'agit de l'un des rares et des meilleurs ouvrages sur le sujet. Ce tome II est consacré aux appareils de prothèse (pp. 1-181) et aux instruments (pp.182-1066) : pour la pratique de la petite chirurgie (chapitres sur le moxa, l'acupuncture, etc.), pour les opérations générales (bistouris, ciseaux, instruments pour la transfusion sanguine, l'hémostase, les amputations, la trépanation, etc.), puis pour les opérations spéciales (ophtalmologie, otologie, chirurgie dentaire, rhino-laryngologie, chirurgie digestive, urologie, gynécologie). L'auteur, médecin militaire, était professeur au Val-de-Grâce. Les descriptions sont détaillées et l'iconographie, constituée de très nombreuses figures gravées sur bois, oeuvre de graveurs renommés, est remarquable par sa précision. Gaujot et Spillmann avaient rassemblé les bois gravés provenant des principaux couteliers de l'époque. Il existe un index alphabétique des noms d'auteur.
