8vo. xi, [1], 109, [3] pp. Map frontisp., photo illustrations & plates throughout. Pictorial green publisher's cloth, map of Orcas Island on front cover & lettering in gilt (minor shelfwears, slight bumping to a couple corners, a few pp. w/ old offset toning from previously laid-in clippings), still a VG bright copy. First edition, and scarce 1st printing, of this informative local history issued following World War II tracing the development of Orcas Island by Euro-Caucasian settlers from 1873 through Prohibition. Of particular interest is the author's extended chapter on "Smugglers and Smuggling" on Orcas Island, including sections on wool smuggling from Vancouver Island, opium and Chinese-American immigrants smuggling overseen by the notorious Lawrence Kelly and Victor McConnell to circumvent the Chinese Exclusion act of 1882, and the same networks were subsequently used during Prohibition to smuggle in vast amounts of alcohol from British Columbia.
