Original calf, bumped to corners, rubbed around the edges, with the outline of gilt frame visible in places. The boards have rebound with a more recent spine in six panels with five raised bands, gilt lettering to the second panel. Ghost of an old label to base of spine. Binding strong. Engraved licence leaf of Will. Morrice, engraved Royal Society arms on verso. Title page a little loose. Two folding plates intact. a couple of dog-ears and small marks, but generally the contents clean and bright. The first edition of the work had been published in 1667; this is the revised Second Edition of 1702. Includes a dedication to the King, poem to the Royal Society, and advertisement to the Reader. This famous response to public attack, in which Sprat justifies the work and nature of the Society, also includes many valuable contributions, including experiments, by the members. Sprat had helped to found the Royal Society and his history elaborates on its scientific purposes and outlines some of the strictures of scientific writing that set the modern standards for clarity and conciseness.
