Pamphlet. 53p., wraps a bit soiled with minor chipping on the edges, period owner's signature with date of 1912 on the front wrap, a few pages with a closed tear in the right margin else good condition, 5.75x8.75 inches. Butler, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize and longtime President of Columbia later was amongst the first to establish a restrictive quota for Jewish students and friendly in the 1930s with German fascists. Springarn a liberal Jewish professor was fired in 1911 went on to become a major activist in the NAACP and worked closely with W.E.B. Du Bois.

Addressed to Rabbi Solomn Goldman of Cleveland, Ohio. In response to a request to present a lecture, Springarn refuses and recommends Lewis Mumford. Included is a file copy of the letter sent which elicited this response. Springarn was a WWI veteran; white leader in the NAACP; established the Springarn Medal; professor (1899-1911) of comparative literature at Columbia; founder (1919) of the publishing firm of Harcourt, Brace and Company.
