An einen ungenannten Dramatiker: "Sie werden wohl auch, lieber Freund, die neuen Vorschläge der Burgtheater-Direction für ausschließliches Aufführungsrecht erhalten haben. Daraus können Sie ersehen, daß diese Direction selbst keineswegs Ihrer Ansicht ist: die Stücke wären ihr früher zur ausschließlichen Aufführung in Wien übergeben worden. Ich denke, dass wir Ihre Ultra-Bedenklichkeit behoben haben, und Sie werden dem Wiener Stadttheater nun die Aufführung Ihrer Stücke gestatten [.]".- Laube eröffnete das Stadttheater am 15. September 1872 mit Schillers "Demetrius". "Daß das Stadttheater als Privattheater mit dem kaiserlichen Hof-Burgtheater nicht in eine echte Konkurrenz treten konnte, war . Laube von allem Anfang an klar; (.) in der Gestaltung des Spielplans gab es Schwierigkeiten, denn das Burgtheater sperrte dem Stadttheater durch Autorenreverse Stücke . wo immer es konnte" (Hadamowsky, Theatergeschichte S. 686).
