By Dr Phil Stack, to my beloved wife I asked a gentleman: "Are you romantic?" He appeared upset at the mere hearing of my question and replied, "No, I'm a man." He and his teen age son left my presence together. "Think I can teach him how to become romantic?" I asked his wife, who seemed to be praying and hoping for a miracle. She flung both arms skyward in an expression of futility. "Good luck," she cried out, and hastily followed her "man" and son. Instead of the response, "No, I'm a man," the gentleman approached his wife and said: "This day is not a Valentine's Day, but I will be yours forever." Then all three, holding hands, left together. Why doesn't it happen that way? In another instance an elderly gentleman was sitting in a wheel chair holding a cane. He and his wife were celebrating their 50th anniversary. In desperation, I heard her say repeatedly, "Just say it once, just once." "I said it once when we married; that ought to hold ya," he replied, whirling his cane above his head and shattering it against the pavement. He could not tell his wife, after 50 years of marriage, "I love you." Now what if she heard from her husband, "together, together, together, I love you in all kinds of weather," how would she feel? She would immediately sprawl across her husband's lap on the wheel chair and both would ride off into the sunset. Why doesn't it happen that way? I approached a wife, asking her, "Is your husband a romantic? "Oh, he's alright," she replied. What did that mean? Such a blase answer must be hiding something, I thought. So I approached the husband and gave him my LUV DROP, a romance card, to give to his wife. Without reading the card he inserted it in the fold of a newspaper and placed it in his mail box. The man called me later to report that his wife was touched and cried with joy. It was the first words of romance she had received from him in 10 years. The card read: I LIKE HOLDING HANDS, BUT I'D RATHER PLAY FOOTSIE. It doesn't take much to stir up the emotions that have hungered for a love expression for so long. But why doesn't the husband do it? A girl's boyfriend is kind, caring and smart and physically attractive. He has a good job and will certainly be a good provider. But he doesn't have a romantic bone in his body. He never once tried to surprise her with flowers or chocolates and scoffs at Valentine's Day. My friend is considering dropping him because she wants someone more romantic. He is good, but for her his good is not good enough without romance. Her whole life could change instantly if she would only hear, whispered in her ear, just a fraction of "together, together." By hearing him say," Darling, I love you in all kinds of weather," I would guess she would marry him in an instant. Though it might be her dream expression, it will most likely never happen. Why? Indeed, the manhood image seems to be a powerful force that restricts some men from being romantically expressive. Why can't men respond with romantic zeal even when it is so very clear that their woman not only desires it but needs it, sometimes desperately? It takes a few words and the cost is zero. ASSESSING THE GOOD / 9 The Primary Mover of All That Is Good At the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C. there is a huge pendulum attached by a cord high up on the ceiling. Its function is to move back and forth. But who caused it to move? Just like the pendulum, the universe had a start and God made that first move. Nothing moved until He gave a first nudge. A good act is like that. It won't happen unless someone initiates it. Someone first notices a need and says, for example, "I wiU help build that house for the poor," or "I will share my potatoes." It follows that if you have abundant power, you can do great things. However, if you have only potatoes, then potatoes are the best you can give. But why do we give the vegetables? Perhaps be cause there is hunger, and we have compassion. We may give because the crop was good, and, having more than we needed for ourselves, we share out of our abundance. We may give because we anticipate something in return or because we want to show off and give our good image a face-Uft. But something is left out. When citing the various reasons for per forming a good act we forgot the most significant one of all, obedience to God. We fulfill another's need not because of self-interests, which are often 10 / I AM A GOOD PERSON ruled by unbridled emotions, but because we obey God. "Love your neighbor as yourself," is His clear directive. When there is an observed need, we listen at two levels of obedience. First, we listen at the level of the person's need, hke hunger. The condition speaks out as clearly as words. Second, we listen to God and hear, "Obey my word; feed the hungry." The belief system is with God. All guidance, therefore, for combining need with the appropriate good act, oc curs with a fervent desire to obey God. God Created Man and He Called It Very Good When God created earth. He called it "good," and when He created man. He called him "very good." Likewise, the role of man is to convert the raw mate rial, the changeable gifts of the earth, which are good, to a very good, self-serving, practical condi tion.
