Berühmt wurde er durch seine Forschungen in der Entomologie. Vom Ende des 19. bis Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts führte er über einen Zeitraum von ca. 30 Jahren intensive Zuchtversuche mit Schmetterlingen durch (Standfuß'sche Temperaturversuche). Max Standfuß war seit 1885 Konservator der entomologischen Sammlung des Eidgenössischen Polytechnikums in Zürich, wurde dort und an der Universität 1892 Privatdozent und 1898 Direktor des Museums; nach einer Tätigkeit als Professor am Polytechnikum wurde er 1913 an die Universität Zürich berufen. Ausgehend von systematisch-biologischen Untersuchungen beschäftigte er sich zunehmend mit Themen der experimentellen Zoologie. Den Schwerpunkt seiner Forschungen bildeten der Einfluß veränderter Temperaturen auf Gestalt und Entwicklung der Schmetterlinge sowie die Kreuzung von Arten" (DBE).
