Sir Henry Morton Stanley GCB (born John Rowlands; 1841 1904) was a Welsh-American explorer, journalist, soldier, colonial administrator, author, and politician famous for his exploration of Central Africa and search for missionary and explorer David Livingstone. Besides his discovery of Livingstone, he is mainly known for his search for the sources of the Nile and Congo rivers, the work he undertook as an agent of King Leopold II of the Belgians that enabled the occupation of the Congo Basin region, and his command of the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition. He was knighted in 1897, and served in Parliament as a Liberal Unionist member for Lambeth North from 1895 to 1900. Dorothy Tennant, Lady Stanley (1855 1926) was an English painter of the Victorian era neoclassicism. In 1890, she married Sir Henry Morton Stanley, and became known as Lady Stanley. She edited her husband's autobiography, reportedly removing any references to other women in Stanley's life. After Sir Henry Morton Stanley's death, his widow remarried, in 1907, to Henry Jones Curtis (died 19 February 1944), a pathologist, surgeon and writer. Thomas Burt PC (1837 1922) was a British trade unionist and one of the first working-class Members of Parliament. Fourth Edition, Inscribed by Dorothy Stanley. RAREB1915DPQM 06/25 - HK2524. First edition; 2 volumes, 8vo (23 x 15.5 cm); signed letter loosely inserted to vol. I, 2 frontispiece portraits, 10 maps including 2 large folding maps in pockets at rear, 33 wood-engraved plates, illustrations in the text, discreet W.H. Smith blindstamps to endpaper of vol 1; publisher's original gilt pictorial cloth with Africa shown in relief with route across in gilt, spines lettered in gilt, a little rubbed, hinges of vol. 1 cracked but firm, a very good set; xiv, [1], 522; ix, 566 pp. With signed letter from Stanley arranging a meeting with Stafford Henry Northcote, 1st Earl of Iddesleigh 'at 6 pm Saturday next week'. Dated 3 January 1887, this letter was written in the three weeks that Stanley was back in London from the Congo hastily preparing the Emin-Pasha expedition. The meeting would never take place: Northcote died on the 12th of January, the Wednesday before the Saturday suggested, meaning Stanley presumably had to meet with his successor the Marquess of Salisbury instead. The story of the Anglo-American expedition to Central Africa, commanded by Stanley and undertaken between 1874 and 1877. The discovery of the course of the Congo, though the greatest, was but one of the many geographical problems solved during this memorable expedition. Vast in size, "the procession that departed from Bagamoyo (Tanzania) on 17 November 1874 stretched for more than half a mile and included dozens of men carrying sections of the Lady Alice, with which Stanley intended to explore Lakes Victoria and Tanganyika and Livingstone's Lualaba River. During the next two and a half years, the expedition would struggle in temperatures reaching as high as 138 degrees; the powerful Emperor Mtesa of Uganda and the Wanyoro chief Mirambo would consume a great deal of Stanley's time and test his diplomatic skills; he would have to negotiate with a notorious Arab ivory and slave trader named Tippu-Tib for safe passage of his men through the great rain forest; and he and his men would fight more than thirty skirmishes and battles on land and water against hostile tribes. The geographic prizes Stanley achieved on this expedition were unparalleled. He spent almost two months circumnavigating Lake Victoria, confirming that the only outlet was at Ripon Falls and hence establishing for good, he thought, the source of the Nile. He scouted Lake Albert, then moved south and west to Lake Tanganyika, which he also circumnavigated, proving it had no connection with Lake Albert. Stanley then solved the remaining geographical puzzle, determining that the Lualaba was not part of the Niger or Nile rivers but ultimately flowed into the Congo. He reached the Atlantic Ocean on 9 August 1877, after a journey of more than seven thousand miles, in utter exhaustion." (Delaney). Mendelssohn II, p.380.

First edition; the copy belonging to Paul Du Chaillu, signed by him, by Stanley and his officers, and other dignitaries in attendance; 12 printed leaves, on green or blue paper, mounted on thick white card. With photographic portraits of Stanley, W.G. Stairs, Thomas Heazle Parke, Robert Henry Nelson, and A.J. Mounteney-Jephson by Henry van de Weyde, London, mounted on 5 leaves, with two further photographic prints showing the Stanley Testimonial Shield and medallions designed by Henry Wellcome, both mounted on one page. Original calf, upper cover embossed with the shield of the United States emblazoned with the name 'Stanley,' and with the American eagle above, white-and-gold patterned endpapers, gilt edges, neatly rebacked. Paul du Chaillu's copy of the special autograph edition of Stanley's American testimonial banquet. An exceptionally interesting copy of this scarce desideratum, signed twice by Du Chaillu, as well as by Stanley and all his officers, as well as Vernon Lovatt Cameron, J.A. Grant, M. Grant Duff and other dignitaries. W. G. Stairs, Stanley's Lieutenant, has written a eulogium on the final leaf in pencil to Paul Du Chaillu, under the heading of 'Africa for Ever.' Following the printed title, the text consists of a list of the Committee and honorary Stewards, including Henry Wellcome as Honorary Secretary, eulogies on Stanley and the four other expedition members, a description of the Stanley Memorial shield, the menu, toast list and programme of music, and finally a list of those 'present at the banquet.' This is one of very few copies with actual autographs. In his letter to Denzil Stanley, Moore states: 'In 1890 a complimentary Dinner was given in London to Sir Henry Morton Stanley after his return from the Emin Pasha Relief Expediiton. Sir Henry Wellcome was honorary Secretary of the Committee which organised the Dinner. 'We have a few leather-bound Souvenirs of the Dinner which are specially interesting because amongst other things they contain photographic prints of Sir Henry Stanley and of the principal members of the expedition, each with autographed signatures.'.

8vo. (10 1/2 x 7 1/4 inches). xvii, 551, [1]pp. Frontispiece portrait plus 15 photogravure plates, 1 folding map, and 2 folding facsimile letters. Publisher's green crushed morocco gilt, upper cover with gilt device of Africa and lettered Bula-Matari, spine lettered in gilt, top edge gilt, others uncut. Green cloth box, with morocco label titled in gilt. Deluxe issue. Number 9 of 250 copies signed by Dorothy Stanley in a fine publisher's morocco binding. Henry Morton Stanley was born in 1841 in Wales illegitimately as John Rowlands, abandoned as an infant by his mother, passed around to various relatives and eventually sent to the St. Asaph Union Workhouse for the Poor after his family members threw him out. As a child, Rowlands suffered years of abuse by his family and in the workhouse. In 1859, at the age of eighteen, he emigrated to America and began the process of reinventing himself, pretending to be an American and taking the name of Henry Hope Stanley, a successful cotton merchant he claimed he had met in New Orleans who informally adopted him and became a father figure to the young Stanley. In his autobiography, Stanley looks back on this time as being heavily affected by the abuse he endured and the stigma of illegitimacy. During the Civil War, Stanley became one of the few people to serve in the Confederate Army, Union Army, and the U.S. Navy, and after the war, he became a newspaper correspondent for the St. Louis "Missouri Democrat" covering General Hancock's army in the Indian campaigns. Stanley elaborates on his adventures during the Civil War and the Plains Indian Wars in the first half of the book. In 1868, Stanley began covering the war in Abyssinia for the "New York Herald," which sent him to Africa to find David Livingstone a year later, a feat that garnered him his first taste of international renown. Stanley then spent the following twenty years exploring and charting the African interior, authoring several best-selling books, and working as a colonial administrator for the Congo Free State of Belgian King Leopold II. In this latter endeavor, Stanley helped to establish one of the most controversial and violent colonial projects in the history of European imperialism. During this time, he worked on his autobiography, "as he indicates, out of a desire to make his nature and character comprehensible to the world which knew him in the day of his fame" (DAB). However, Stanley died in 1904 before he could finish it, and his wife, Dorothy, whom he married in 1890, stepped in to edit and prepare it for publication, completing the work from Stanley's notes and drafts. It was then published in London and Boston in 1909. In that same year, however, his wife found additional materials in their country house and a new deluxe limited edition of the "Autobiography" was issued in 250 copies. The new edition included a facsimile letter Dorothy found which had been sent by the young Stanley in 1858 when he was still known as John Rowlands, presented as proof that he was born and raised in North Wales. Copies of this deluxe limited edition were mostly given out to Stanley's close friends. Half the work is dedicated to the early years of Stanley's life in Wales and America, revealing the troubled origin story of the figure who would become the most accomplished and celebrated 19th-century African explorer. It also contains a detailed folding map of central Africa, with Stanley's routes outlined in color. DAB XVII, pp.509-13. Adam Hochschild, King Leopold's Ghost ; Howgego IV, 560.

A lovely example of this rare set, the bindings unusually fresh with the morocco and vellum in an especially good state of preservation, extremely fresh and clean internally. Only a light bit of aging to the vellum, quite unusual in this condition. VERY SCARCE LIMITED EDITION OF ONE OF THE PRINCIPLE WRITINGS OF ONE OF THE GREATEST EXPLORERS OF THE DARK CONTINENT. "By 1885 Stanley had become deeply interested in the schemes of Mr. (afterwards Sir) William Mackinnon, chairman of the British India Steam Navigation Company, for establishing a British protectorate in East Equatorial Africa, and it was believed that this object could be furthered at the same time that relief was afforded to Emin Pasha, governor of the the Equatorial Province of Egypt, who had been isolated by the Mahdist rising of 1881-1885.Instead of choosing the direct route Stanley decided to go by way of the Congo, as thereby he would be able to render services to the infant Congo State, then encountering great difficulties with the Zanzibar Arabs established on the Upper Congo" (EB). Stanley and Tippoo Tib, the chief of the Congo Arabs, entered into an agreement for the latter to assume governorship of the Stanley Falls station and supply carriers for the Emin relief expedition, and then travelled up the Congo to Bangala together. They parted ways at Stanley Falls and Stanley started his trip toward Albert Nyanza, leaving a rear-guard at Yambuya on the lower Aruwimi under the command of Major E.M. Barttelot. Stanley's journey to Albert Nyanza became a hazardous 160-day march through "nothing but miles and miles, endless miles of forest" that claimed the lives of over half of Stanley's men from starvation, disease, and hostility of the natives. Finally upon the arrival at Albert Nyanza, Stanley achieved communication with Emin but was troubled by the non-arrival of his rear-guard. He retraced his steps back to Yambuya to find that Tippoo Tib had broken faith, Barttelot had been murdered, and the camp was in disarray and only one European was left. Stanley again set out for Albert Nyanza, where Stanley, Emin Pasha, and the survivors of the rear-guard began the return journey to Zanzibar by way of Uganda, a trip during which he discovered the Mountains of the Moon (Ruwenzori), traced the course of the Semliki River, discovered Albert Edward Nyanza and the great southwestern gulf of Victorian Nyanza. Of Stanley's original 646 men, only 246 survived. This account of his adventures was wildly popular and published in six languages. This particular edition is extremely scarce in such excellent condition.
