Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. Appointment in Sarajevo; Robert Tyler Stevens; Souvenir Press, London, 1978. First edition review copy notice from Methuen Canada laid in. Robert Tyler stevens was one of several pseudonyms used by British author Reginald Thomas Staples. From the blurb Vienna, 1914. In the shadow of the Emperor, Franz Joseph, stood the Heir Apparent, the Archduke Franz Ferdinand, awaiting his chance to inherit and to bring needed reforms. The anarchist organization, the Black Hand of Serbia, had other ideas, however. Into the melting-pot of that long hot summer stepped James William Fraser, to collide with the Baroness Sophie von Korvacs and her sister Anne. All three were destined to find themselves in a deadly encounter with anarchists on the eve of Sarajevo, where sever Black Hand conspirators kept their appointment with Franz Ferdinand, and he his appointment with death. Appointment in Sarajevo is vivid, nostalgic, and moving, a romantic adventure story as sad and gay as the author's The Summer Day is Done, as full of suspense and drama as his Flight from Bucharest. This book, 383 pages, is in fine condition in a near-fine dust jacket that is now enclosed in a protective mylar wrap. The only fault, barely noticeable, with the dust jacket is a mark from a paper clip on the back of the jacket. A spectacular copy of a very scarce book.

This book delves into the turbulent era of Reconstruction in Arkansas, a period marked by political upheaval, social transformation, and lingering conflict following the Civil War. The author examines the complex events that unfolded between 1862 and 1875, tracing the state's journey from nominal military rule to the eventual return of Democratic power. The book offers a detailed account of the failed attempt to establish a loyal state government under military governor John S. Phelps, the rise of a loyal Unionist movement, and the controversial 1864 Constitutional Convention. It explores the challenges of implementing Congressional Reconstruction, including the role of the Freedmen's Bureau, and analyzes the volatile dynamics of the Republican Party's rise and eventual downfall in Arkansas. Through a meticulous examination of primary sources and official records, the author sheds light on the intricate interplay of local and national forces that shaped the Reconstruction experience in Arkansas. The book goes beyond mere historical narrative, delving into the complexities of racial politics, social change, and economic development during this pivotal period. Ultimately, this book provides a nuanced and insightful exploration of the struggles and triumphs that defined Reconstruction in Arkansas, highlighting the lasting impact of these events on the state's political and social landscape.
