hardcover. Condition: New. Route of the Cariboo: Pacific Great Eastern - British Columbia RailThis title is now outdated as it was published in 1994. The history and the photographs are still relevant today, though.Route of the Cariboo presents railroading in one of North America's most scenic and rugged regions. The Pacific Great Eastern Railway was incorporated in 1912 to serve a sparsely populated wilderness whose natural resources were expected to sustain train traffic. For many years afterwards, the line operated at a loss and was several times threatened with abandonment, its two disconnected segments taken over by the provincial government and its initials - PGE - jokingly was said to mean the "Province's Great Elephant." Today's modern BC Rail system covers over 1,200 miles and barely resembles the old PGE operation, although the fantastic scenery is still there. Tourists come from around the world to enjoy it, travelling on BC Rail's efficient Rail Diesel Cars or aboard the summertime Royal Hudson Steam Train which offers the continent's last regularly scheduled mainline steam-powered passenger service. This first fully-illustrated history of the PGE and BC Rail includes nearly 400 photographs and illustrations, including 64 pages in full color, showing the trains, stations, people and tracks that make up this fascinating railway. The informative text includes numerous entertaining first-hand accounts and anecdotes, plus maps and equipment rosters. Readers who have not yet travelled over BC Rail will wonder why, before they finish this volume. Contents: Early History and Construction, pp. 6â"48 Color Section, pp. 49â"64 PGE "Boosters" (fans of the line), pp. 65â"160 Color Section, pp. 161â"176 Locations, pp. 177â"192 Color Section, pp. 193â"208 Motive Power and Rolling Stock, pp. 209â"240 Color Section, pp. 241â"255.Hardcover with dust jacket, 256 pages, standard landscape format, 10 x 8 in B&W and Color photographs and illustrations. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. As part of our family's cultural life, we have a large collection of old photographs showing Indian people, their camps, and scenes of many traditional activities. Among our favorites of these are ones that include native children, perhaps because four of them have grown up in our own household. It would be wonderful if the photographers had left a lot of information with these old pictures. Instead, we are lucky when they have names, dates or tribal affiliations; many are just blank dn the back. In this book, the title on each page will include whatever facts we have. After that, what we've written is based on our own research combined with thoughts and ideas inspired by our family's cultural life. These words are mainly presented for pleasure; the value of each photo speaks for itself. Life for the Indian people of North America has changed a great deal since most of these pictures were taken. Instead of tipis, they now live in houses with tvs and running water. Instead of horses, they ride motorcycles and cars. Modern hunters get most of their food from supermarkets, while the girls use hair dryers and dream about favorite singing stars. Yet, if you go to the tribes and locations mentioned in the titles, chances are you'll still find kids with pride in their traditional cultures. On special occasions, they might even be dressed as you see them in these pictures. We present this book most of all to encourage such kids in keeping alive their tribal cultures, while at the same time showing people of other cultures why Indian childhood is something to be very proud of.
