[.] An Album Containing One Hundred Studies of Famous Porcelains reproduced in Full Colors, Complete with Descriptive and Historical Notes in English, French, German, Japanese, Spanish, Italian and Chinese. Large 4to, hardback. pp. 222. Extremely rare book, with this copy being 1 of…only 1000 editions ever printed. The title page is particularly colourful, and features a b&w picture of the author-curator himself posing with two porcelain lions. Complete with all 102 plates, displaying in full-colour print artistic treasures from ancient China, some of which identify, or identified, among 'the most valuable antiquities in the world'. This collection of art was hand-selected by Star Talbot, famous scholar and collector of Chinese art, who also writes the preface. As well as being printed in English and Chinese, the preface is translated into French, Spanish, German and Japanese. Spine has been replaced - which is noticeable at the seams - and the cover has been subjected to typical wear and tear due to age. Bottom right hand corner in particular is slightly frayed, whilst there are some marks noticeable elsewhere on the cover. Each plate is guarded with protective paper which, in some cases, is slightly creased. The paper protecting the eighth plate, for example, contains a large crease through the middle where the paper has been folded in the past. Some very minor foxing is present. Also, some of the page edges are slightly frayed, but the book remains in very good condition for its age.

Illustrated title p…age and 102 exquisite colour plates depicting Chinese porcelain, on coated paper under captioned tissue guards. A scarce and well regarded work on Chinese Porcelain covering the Ming-Qing dynasties (1368-1912). Talbot was a Eurasian entrepreneur, who established the first medicine factory in Shanghai. He built up an enviable collection of Chinese porcelain, upon which this book is based and went on to develop a method of porcelain manufacture to reproduce the finest Qing-style enamel wares. He also founded a photographic business operated by his daughter Mae Linda Talbot, who became one of the earliest documented female photographers in China.
