Un grande museo rende omaggio a un maestro della pittura, più volte tramortita nel corso dei decenni, e più volte riemersa, fino a essere riconosciuta come un linguaggio legittimo. Non era così chiaro né così sicuro negli anni della formazione… di Stefano Di Stasio, attraversati da avanguardie e ricerche sperimentali che sembravano aver bandito per sempre la pittura. Non era vero, non poteva essere vero, ma questa maledizione aveva colpito maestri della generazione precedente a quella di Di Stasio, come Pietro Annigoni, Gregorio Sciltian, Riccardo Tommaso Ferroni, artisti sopravvissuti, mal tollerati, fuori della storia. Ma artisti veri. Nella stessa famiglia, fratelli potevano prendere strade diverse, essendo uno esaltato e l'altro esecrato o ignorato: Tancredi e suo fratello Romano Parmeggiani, Piero Gilardi e suo fratello Silvano "Abacuc", Giuseppe Penone e suo fratello Giovanni.Per un ragazzo nato nel 1948 questi campi di battaglia lasciavano a terra morti come monito a non seguire la stessa strada. Intanto alcuni, come Giro Marotta, cominciavano a coltivare dubbi, a riabituare la mano a disegnare, su stimolo di Giovanna e Paolo Portoghesi per "Apollodoro"; e certamente dovevano sorprendere e determinare interrogativi e curiosità le parabole di artisti come Salvo e Carlo Maria Mariani, e Bruno d'Arcevia. Nel fatidico 1978 qualcuno poteva arrivare a pensare che il ritorno alla pittura fosse una strada più originale di qualunque sperimentazione di nuovi materiali, o di pure idee. Anche i critici iniziavano ad avere nuovi avvertimenti e turbamenti. In una delle sue recenti biografie critiche si legge: "Stefano Di Stasio è l'artista che, tra i pionieri del ritorno alla pittura a cavallo degli anni '70 e '80, fu, in particolare, uno dei primi a proporre un'arte radicalmente in antitesi con l'azzeramento operato dalle ultime neo-avanguardie degli anni '70.
