The titles in this lot were published in 1941, Vol.2 .with the R.A.F. and V…ol. 3 .in Lybia. Robert Sidney Bowen, Jr. (1900-1977) was a World War I aviator, newspaper journalist, magazine editor and author who was born in Boston, Massachusetts, and died in Honolulu, Hawaii, at the age of 76. He is best known for his boys' series books written during World War II, the Dave Dawson War Adventure Series and the Red Randall Series. He also worked under the name R. Sidney Bowen and under the pseudonym James Robert Richard. The Crown Publishers approached Mr. Bowen about developing this series and they published the 1st Editions. Crown had an arrangement with Saalfield to allow them to produce an inexpensive version which is the edition most commonly found. The books for sale are from Saalfield. Hardcovers have red & brown cloth boards with black lettering on front and spine, but only Vol. 3 has a DJ. Interior is tight, clean and text is unmarked. Vol. 2 has prior owner's signature and Vol. 3 an ex-libris sticker from a department store on front paste-down. Gutters torn out in Vol. 2, not repaired. Bookworm holes in page-edges. pages fragile and discolored. Still is remarkably readable shape for over 80 year old child's books. Copyright 1941. 12 titles in series. Undated, however this edition published circa 1860 according to records at the University of Liverpool Library.Illustrated with a monochrome plate frontispiece.Full bound…in the original publisher's decorated cloth with a floral paper label to the front board.Includes four pages of publisher's advertisements to the rear of the work.Scarce.This is a mid-nineteenth-century work for children by Charlotte Elizabeth Bowen, the author of Timid Lucy and Heart and Hand, who published the majority of her works anonymously or under the pseudonym Sarah Schoonmaker Baker. In its description of a devoted, black caregiver to two white children and their collective adventures, it includes stark examples of the racist stereotypes perpetuated in American culture during the transatlantic slave trade. In the original publisher's full cloth binding. Externally, generally smart with some minor handling marks, slight discolouration to the front board's paper label sticker, and a small damp stain to the cloth at the rear. Light bumping to the head and tail of the spine and the extremities, and rubbing to the fore edge resulting in fractional lifting and splitting of the cloth. Gift inscription to the recto of the front free endpaper. Internally, binding firm. Pages are a trifle age toned however generally clean with the occasional spot or light handling mark. This book is in very good or…der. Colours are good even though the actual printing by Warnes is fairly rudimentary. The book was designed to be cut up and the images either framed or presented as a tableau to interact with. Times were simpler in 1880's London. Litho Illustrations by master printer J.M. Kronheim which tells the story of the salvation of a young bird at Christmas . Lost in its first snow, a small robin seeks warmth and shelter, initially at a lordly mansion and finally at a church where it raises its song along with children practicing for a Christmas concert, Victorian feel good kitsch.
