Condition: very good. Amsterdam, Van der Hey, 1818. xii, 163 pp. (Loosely inserted is a booklet: "Almanak voor het jaar 1819" 12 pp. ) 12mo. 9x14 cm. Original publisher's green decoratively printed boards; with engraved allegorical frontispiece. Nice copy in original boards, only minor wear to binding. Printed ex-libris on first… endpaper. The original work is Philip Dormer Stanhope's "The oeconomy of human life, translated from an Indian manuscript". The fashion for Indian antiquities and philosophy was the rage and the polite fiction of the discovered manuscript lent it an air of authority. It was first published in 1750 and went through many editions. This Dutch translation comes to us via the French: "Manuel de tous les âges, ou Économie de la vie humaine : traduit d'un ancien manuscrit indien en anglois, et de l'anglois en francois" (1782).
