Und in der Gästekantine floss mancher Liter Frascati unter dem Gemälde von Kardinal Schiner, der mit den eidgenössischen…Kriegern über die Alpen zieht. Vielen sind diese Bilder bekannt und unvergesslich. Aber wer war der Maler?Zu Leben und Werk von Robert Schiess wurde bisher nur wenig geschrieben. In den letzten Jahren aber suchten Heiri Scherer und Ignaz Staub alle verfügbaren Informationen und Bildwerke zusammen. 2016 realisierten sie in Cham, der Heimatgemeinde von Robert Schiess, eine grosse Ausstellung und zeigten über 90 Originalwerke. Jetzt erschien unter ihrer Leitung ein Buch, das auf 120 Seiten viele Bilder aus der Schweiz und aus Rom zeigt und den bewegten Lebenslauf des Künstlers nachzeichnet.Verraten sei an dieser Stelle nur so viel: Robert Schiess kam 1896 in Cham zur Welt und absolvierte in Altdorf die Lehre zum Flachmaler. 1923 trat er in die Schweizergarde ein und blieb vier Jahre. 1933 trat er ein zweites Mal ein und nun blieb er bis 1951 in der Garde. Jetzt entstanden die grossen Gemälde, die wir bis heute all kennen: In Hodlers Manier die Helden von Marignano im Theatersaal, die Schlachtenfiguren von Morgarten und Sempach in der Gästekantine, wo auch das grosse Gemälde mit Kardinal Schiner prangt, weiter die riesigen Bilder der Gotthardpost und des Matterhorns, aber auch die kleine, eindrückliche Porträtserie der Gardekommandanten seit 1506, die im Büro des Gardeobersten in Rom hängt. Daneben aber entstanden Dutzende und Dutzende weiterer Werke, die der Öffentlichkeit verborgen blieben und hier jetzt erstmals vorgestellt werden ? dazu ein Lebenslauf, der 1956 auf Ischia endete und von dem wir jetzt dank dem Buch zu Robert Schiess die wichtigsten Stationen erfahren. Kurzum: Eine lang ersehnte Publikation, die eine Wissenslücke zur jüngeren Gardegeschichte schliesst und dies nun auf gut dokumentierter Basis in ansprechend gestalteter Form erfüllt. 1200 gr.
