First Edition
1st Edition. FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPS OF BOHM-STAVER'S FIRST DISCUSSION OF WHAT WOULD BECOME KNOWN AS THE BOHM-STAVER FORMULA FOR THE VELOCITY OF SOUND IN METALS. The Bohm-Staver letter offered here represents the first discussion of "the explicit influence of electron interaction on the frequency of the longitudinal phonons" (Solid State Physics 1). Tor Staver was a young Norwegian graduate student with whom Bohm worked while at Princeton. Together, they proposed a density fluctuation approach, treating ions and electrons as a set of â??coupled' plasmas. In the treatment of electronic screening of the long-wave-length ionic motions in a classical plasma, Bohm and Staver's technique would allow them to obtain a simple dispersion relation.
