Neuware - This work contains the more significant part of a wider journal kept by the Hessian Jäger Corps during the American Revolutionary War - a corps forming part of the German mercenary troops employed by the British. It is particularly interesting for its first-hand account of the jägers' involvement in the Philadelphia campaign, the occupation of Philadelphia, and the subsequent withdrawal across New Jersey to New York. Besides an English translation, the German text is provided.At the start of the Philadelphia campaign the Jäger Corps comprised four companies of foot jägers - three Hessian and one Anspach - and one mounted company, in all 600 men. As their name implies, most were huntsmen and all were crack shots, being armed with rifles, not muskets. While at Philadelphia the Corps was augmented by two newly arrived companies from Germany, increasing the total complement to 900, but it had suffered materially by attrition. For example, in the Battle of Brandywine two officers and six men were killed, whereas three sergeants and 35 privates were seriously wounded, the former of whom and many of the latter died. And so the losses continued during the numerous minor actions in which the Corps was engaged. The élite of the Hessian troops, the jägers were employed to great advantage in leading the van of a marching army or protecting its rear, covering a withdrawal, reconnoitring, and conducting partisan warfare, particularly ambuscades.…

Leather. Condition: Very Good. First edition. The first edition of this work detailing nineteenth century travel in South Africa. Illustrated, with six plates and a large folding map of South Africa to volume I. Eight plates to volume II. Illustrations to this work of animals are by W Harvey, 'from specimens in the Author's possession'. Lithographs are by T M Baynes. The view of Fort Wiltshire is by Mr Turvey. Collated, complete. Bookplate to front pastedown of both volumes, Henry Hepburn Bright. Bound by Saul Solomon and Co, Cape Town, with the label to the front pastedown. An uncommon work. This work reflects on the geography, flora, fauna, hunting and colonies in South Africa during the nineteenth century. Steedman's work also highlights several 'new and undescribed animals'. Steedman first arrived at Cape Colony in 1820 as an independent settler arriving on a settler ship. He ran a successful business in the colony which then enabled him to fund his travels in search of natural history specimens. Over the years Steedman collected over 300 animals, including many that had not been seen before. Upon his eventual return to England and prior to the publication of this work he held an exhibition of his animals. In half calf bindings with marbled paper boards. Externally, generally smart. Light rubbing to the joints and to the extremities. Heavy rubbing to the boards. Spines have faded due to rubbing. Prior owner's bookplate to the front pastedown, Henry Hepburn Bright. Binder's stamp to the front pastedown, Saul Solomon and Co, Cape Town. Prior owner's inscription to the recto of front endpaper to both volumes, dated 1926. Internally, both volumes are firmly bound. Tissue guard to plate at page 9 to volume II is loosening. Pages are generally bright.
