Seiden B24, fols. 192-211): his corrections are not annotated (Watry 2004, 174).

Condition: Fine. A masterpiece of early 20th-century book design, featuring the debut of the 'King's Fount' designed specifically by Charles Ricketts for this volume. This edition of the 'Kingis Quair' (The King's Book)the seminal 15th-century poem attributed to the captive King James I of Scotlandrepresents the pinnacle of the Vale Press's mission to unite medieval literature with modernist typographic discipline. One of only 260 copies printed on handmade paper. KEY FEATURES +++ Visuals: Composed in the specialized 'King's Fount' type; printed in red and black throughout with ornamental initials and layout designed by Charles Ricketts. +++ Binding: Rebound to exactly match the original quarter-linen over blue paper boards; featuring the original printed label on the front cover set in the 'King's Fount'. +++ Content: A Chaucerian poem in 'rhyme royal' stanzas, prefaced with quotations from Rossetti's 'The King's Tragedy'. +++ Imprint: Printed at the Ballantyne Press under the supervision of Ricketts for Hacon and Ricketts, London, and John Lane, New York. +++ Specs: Octavo (9.25 inches tall); 28 leaves [pp. i-iv, v-liv, lv-lvi] with 6 blank leaves of matching paper. +++ Design: Executed by a select team of compositors and pressmen freed from commercial demands to achieve 'Private Press' perfection. CONDITION: Fine. A remarkably fresh example; the bindings are tight, square, and devoid of flaws beyond minimal handling. The text is clean and bright, exhibiting only a hint of age-toning to the text block edges. The original front cover label shows the slightest darkening on the top edge but remains crisp. A superior, archive-ready copy. SCHOLARLY FEATURES +++ Literary Impact: The Kingis Quair is the foundation of the Chaucerian movement in Scottish literature. Written in seven-line stanzas, its royal attribution is the reason this specific meter is known as 'rhyme royal.' +++ Typographic History: This volume is the first appearance of the 'King's Fount,' Ricketts' third and final typeface. It was designed to bridge the gap between the heavy 'Black Letter' of the medieval era and the clarity of modern Roman type. +++ Manuscript Context: The poem survives in a single manuscript (MS Arch. Selden B. 24) at the Bodleian Library; Ricketts' edition serves as a 20th-century 'visual translation' of that solitary medieval source. +++ Scarcity: Comparison records indicate this title is significantly uncommon, with only five institutional copies located in OCLC/WorldCat and two additional copies cited in Watry. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE --- The Vale Press (18941904) was a central pillar of the 'Revival of Printing' movement alongside the Kelmscott and Doves Presses. Unlike his contemporaries, Charles Ricketts did not own a physical printing works; instead, he commanded a 'press within a press' at Ballantyne, ensuring that every elementfrom the ink density to the paper grainmet his exacting modernist-medievalist standards. This 1903 Kingis Quair matters because it represents the penultimate achievement of the press before its dissolution in 1904. By marrying the verse of a 15th-century captive king with a bespoke typeface, Ricketts created a 'total work of art.' It remains a primary artifact for the study of the Aesthetic Movement and the evolution of the private press ideal. SUBJECTS: Charles Ricketts, Vale Press, James I of Scotland, Scottish Literature, Middle English Poetry, Fine Press Movement, Typographic Design, Ballantyne Press, Private Press, Limited Edition, Poetry, Art Nouveau / Aesthetic Movement. BIBLIOGRAPHIC REFERENCE: Watry B-42; Livingstone p. 1; L'Art Ancien #62.
