This copy is a the first edition, limited to 1000 copies. Frontis photos of Stein and Thomson by Carl Van Vechten. Cover art by Robert J. Pontabry. Cover corner is creased and spine bottom edges are starting to tear, and lightly soiled. Interior is very good condition - no markings. This copy was from Otto Luening's estate, but his ownership is not provable.

This is a surprisingly scarce recording of a landmark American opera. "The cast is substantially identical with that of the original [1934] production.".

(grey decorated cloth, no dust jacket) [binding intact, lower tips bumped (with some exposure of boards), but the main thing to know is that the spine is severely damaged, with most of the cloth spine covering missing]. (two B&W photographs) This opera, first performed at Columbia University in May 1947, was inspired by the life and career of Susan B. Anthony, and includes a wide range of historical characters, among them Daniel Webster, Anthony Comstock, Ulysses S. Grant and Lillian Russell. This is No. 45 of 55 copies (of which only 50 were for sale) which were "printed on special paper, cloth bound and numbered . and are signed [on the limitation page] by Virgil Thomson." (The regular trade edition was 1,000 copies in wrappers.) NOT included with this copy are the three original portrait photographs by Carl Van Vechten which were originally issued with each of the numbered copies. Stein's artist subjects include Guillaume Apollinaire, Christian Bérard, Eugene Berman, Bernard Faÿ, Georges Hugnet, Pablo Picasso, Erik Satie, Pavel Tchelitchew, Kristians Tonny, and Virgil Thomson, who would adapt Stein's methods to another medium and produce dozens of his own musical portraits over the coming decades. A well-preserved copy with both the original glassine and paper dust jacket. 9'' x 6.5''. Original cream wrappers. In original cream dust jacket and original glassine.
