Published by Paul de Montaignac, 1936. Quarto size. Portfolio with 16 loose plates. 12.5" x 9.5". Signed and inscribed by the artist on the title page. Lilly Steiner (18841961) was an Austrian painter and graphic artist. Limited edition of which this is number 36. --- --- The plates are clean and undamaged. The portfolio shows signs of wear. The ties are largely gone. The paper of the portfolio shows some slim water damage on the left edge of the front cover. ---- ---- ---- After graduating from the School of Arts for Women and Girls in Vienna, Lilly Hofmann married the manufacturer Hugo Steiner in 1904. (he was a fellow student of Karl Kraus and from 1903 the employer of Adolf Loos.) After limited success in Vienna, she moved with her husband to Paris, where she received the acceptance that she missed in Austria. She made several portfolios with expression studies of conductors and artists, incl. Toscanini, Alban Berg and Aristide Maillol. Her illustrations dealing with the subject of motherhood are also well known.

Lilly Steiner (1884 Wien -1961 Paris) war eine österreichische Künstlerin jüdischer Herkunft, die Teil der Wiener Moderne war. Ihre künstlerische Ausbildung erhielt sie bei Ludwig Michalek an der Kunstschule für Frauen in Wien. 1904 heiratete sie den Industriellen Hugo Steiner und beauftragte später den Architekten Adolf Loos mit dem Entwurf eines Hauses für sie. Das 1910 erbaute "Haus Steiner" gilt heute als architektonisches Wahrzeichen der Moderne in Wien. Bis zu Steiners Umzug nach Paris 1927 war sie aktives Mitglied des berühmten Künstlervereins Hagenbund in Wien. Vgl. Thieme-Becker, Band 31, Seiten 558-559.
