The book contains interviews with more than 150 Germans who witnessed and participated in~or resisted~the rise of Adolph Hitler. The testimony in Voices from the Third Reich comes from former soldiers; well~known individuals such as Klaus von Bismarck, Helmut Kohl, and Manfred Rommel; ordinary civilians; ethnic Germans living outside Germany; and victims of the criminal policies of the Nazi regime. They tell what it was like to fight in the brutal conditions of the Eastern front, suffer through the incendiary bombings of Dresden and Hamburg, and lurk the seas in a hunted U~boat. Readers will learn what it was like to face the horrible dilemma of wanting to save one's homeland from outside enemies, while realizing that it is being governed by enemies from within. In this book are haunting and extraordinary tales of horror, courage, grim determination, and moral confusion~from women who were raped by drunken Soviet troops, children who grew up in the Hitler Youth manning antiaircraft batteries and playing amongst the rubble of war, and Jewish survivors of the Nazi death camps. The Second World War changed the face of Europe forever. Voices from the Third Reich takes the material of grand history and presents it in the form of individual human experiences~the experiences of men and women subjected to the pressures of total war in a totalitarian state. Voices from the Third Reich explains, in a way no other book can, what it was like to be a German in the Second World War. The interviews in Voices from the Third Reich were compiled during two years of research by General Johannes Steinhoff and Dr. Peter Pechel. Professor Dennis Showalter provided the historical introductions that precede each selection of interviews. General Johannes Steinhoff served in the German Air Force during the war and saw action in France, Norway, the Battle of Britain, Russia, Italy, North Africa, Rumania, and the skies over Germany. He was a commander of the first jet fighter wing to be formed in the German Air Force, and suffered severe burns, from which it took him years to recover, after a crash near Munich in 1945. Steinhoff, former Chief of Staff of the German Air Force and Chairman of the NATO Military Committee, is the author of Messerschmitts over Sicily, The Final Hours, and Whither NATO. Peter Pechel is the son of Rudolf Pechel, the former editor and publisher of Deutsche Rundschau who was imprisoned in a concentration camp by the Gestapo. Pechel fought in the German Army, reaching the rank of captain during the war, and saw duty in Poland, Greece, the Soviet Union, and France. He holds a doctorate from the University of Zurich and has been a foreign correspondent for German television in Britain, Africa, and the United States.
