Passy, St Pölten, 1839, first edition of this translation into German; 8vo, pp [368]; early full calf gilt, skilfully repaired at both hinges although with the back board now loose; marbled end papers and gilt decoration on the inner binding edges, outer edges of all pages coloured yellow; occasional light foxing but internally a very good, tight copy. The translation from the original Latin to German by Görres, a classicist, poet and historian, is highly regarded and this is a particularly attractive edition, each page being set in a handsome decorative border, each chapter with a decorative initial and each book opening with a full page illustration, all in the form of woodcuts and apparently by the historical painter and Nazarene [Eduard von] Steinle. Note that this is, not surprisingly, in German (the apparent claiming of its being in English is because this badly written program I'm using, Home Base, makes it almost impossibly difficult to find a given language in the plethora of languages offered, 95% of which are never going to be wanted anyway; quite daft!).

Fadengehefteter grüner Ganzledereinband mit reicher Rücken- und Deckelgoldprägung, goldgeprägtem Rückentitel, drei Schmuckbünden, dreiseitigem Echtgoldschnitt, farbigen Moireevorsätzen und farbigem seidenem Leseband. Der Kopfschnitt mit dezenter Bereibung, ansonsten in sehr gutem Erhaltungszustand. Der Text dieses Bandes folgt der Werkausgabe, die Wolfgang Frühwald und Friedhelm Kemp 1963 in München herausgegeben haben. Die Auswahl besorgte Petra Munte. Clemens Wenzeslaus Brentano (* 9. September 1778 in Ehrenbreitstein (heute Koblenz), Kurtrier; gestorben 28. Juli 1842 in Aschaffenburg, Königreich Bayern) war ein deutscher Schriftsteller und neben Achim von Arnim der Hauptvertreter der sogenannten Heidelberger Romantik. Edward von Steinle (auch Eduard von Steinle; * 2. Juli 1810 in Wien; gestorben 19. September 1886 in Frankfurt am Main) war ein österreichischer Maler des 19. Jahrhunderts. Edward von Steinle war Schüler der Akademie der bildenden Künste in Wien, später von Leopold Kupelwieser und ging 1828 nach Rom, wo er sich eng an Friedrich Overbeck und Philipp Veit anschloss und bis 1833 blieb. Nach Wien zurückgekehrt, wurde er für großjährig erklärt und heiratete am 10. April 1834 die Wienerin Karoline Kern. Danach lebte er mit einigen Unterbrechungen, unter anderem veranlasst durch einen Aufenthalt in München zur Erlernung der Freskotechnik bei Peter von Cornelius, in Frankfurt am Main und wurde dort 1850 erster Professor am Städelschen Institut. Steinle hat auch eine große Anzahl von meist religiösen Staffeleibildern geschaffen, aber auch Porträts und romantisch gehaltene Genrebilder (Der Türmer und Der Violinspieler in der Galerie Schack zu München); ferner eine Menge von Zeichnungen und Aquarellen, teils religiösen Inhalts, teils nach shakespeareschen und anderen Dichtungen. Diese Aquarelle haben meist einen romantischen Zug, den er schon frühzeitig durch den Verkehr mit Clemens Brentano angenommen hatte, dessen Dichtungen ihm ebenfalls mehrere Motive geboten haben. Seine Hauptwerke dieser Gattung sind: Rheinmärchen und die mehreren Wehmüller nach Brentano, die Beichte in St. Peter zu Rom, Szene aus "Was ihr wollt" von Shakespeare (in der Berliner Nationalgalerie), Schneeweißchen und Rosenrot und der Parzival-Cyklus, sämtlich Aquarelle.
