First Trade Edition. Quarto (24.5cm.); original grey pictorial wrappers; 207pp.; frontispiece & 14 tissue guarded plates; numerous text illus. throughout. Wrappers a bit worn, especially at spine edges; preliminaries foxed, else Very Good and sound overall. Bleak collection of stories following in the footsteps of Zola's naturalistic novel Germinal. Mostly set in the mines of northern France; beautifully, albeit lugubriously, illustrated by the Art Nouveau painter and printmaker Théophile Steinlen. CRAUZAT 639.
