Na zijn dood werd hij dan ook in de eerste plaats herdacht als een sociaal-opstandig schilder en karikaturist. Er is echter ??n thema dat zijn werk vanaf het begin is blijven domineren: zijn liefde voor katten. Als jong kunstenaar vestigde hij zich in Parijs zijn roem met een serie kattenprenten waaraan hij er tot in het laatst van zijn leven talloze heeft toegevoegd. Men heeft in het werk van Steinlen het samengaan geprezen van een uiterst tedere lyriek met een felle sociale hartstochtelijkheid. Zelf schreef hij dit speciale talent toe aan de invloed van de Japanse prentkunst, die ook in zijn affiches is terug te vinden.; scheurtje stofomslag geplakt; enkele lichte vlekjes omslag.

Journaliste, romancier et auteur dramatique français, il a fait partie des premiers membres de l'Académie Goncourt et en fut le président. En 1889, il est l auteur de Sous-offs, ouvrage antimilitariste qui lui vaut des poursuites judiciaires. Théophile Alexandre Steinlen (1859-1923) est un artiste anarchiste, peintre, graveur, illustrateur, affichiste et sculpteur suisse, naturalisé français en 1901. Logeant depuis 1883 sur la butte Montmartre, Steinlen fait rapidement connaissance avec les personnalités artistiques qui y gravitent. Il entre en relation avec Adolphe Willette, et Antonio de La Gandara avec lesquels il fréquente à partir de 1884 le Chat noir, le cabaret tenu par Rodolphe Salis, devenant notamment l'ami d'Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. Il y connaît naturellement Aristide Bruant. Il expose initialement au Salon des indépendants, en 1893, puis, régulièrement, au Salon des humoristes.
