Als der Orden 1773 aufgelöst wurde, verlor er seine Stelle. - 1749 war Johann Ignaz Wagner aus Augsburg mi…t der Bitte an den Freiburger Senat bzw. an den Jesuitenorden angetreten, "einen kleinen Bücherverlag zum Besten des Publici sowohl als besonders der hochlöblichen Universität anzulegen". Dem wurde entsprochen, und offensichtlich hat Wagner den Betrieb von der Witwe (vidua) des Fanz Xaver Schaal übernommen, von dem Drucke zwischen 1725 und 1745 bekannt sind. Vermutlich handelt es sich hier um eines der ersten Bücher der Wagnerschen Buchhandlung. Steinmayer gehörte zu den aufgeklärten Priestern der Josephinischen Periode, der noch als Jesuit mit seinen Oberen nicht eben im glatten Einvernehmen stand. Als der Philosoph Wolf sein neues System bekannt gemacht, trat Steinmayer mit ihm sofort in brieflichen Verkehr, kaufte seine Werke, studirte sie auf das eifrigste und bildete sich nach ihnen. Seine Oberen, die damit nicht einverstanden waren, nahmen ihm diese Bücher, die er gewöhnlich im Strohsack versteckt zu halten pflegte, zu wiederholten Malen weg. Als ein geschworner Feind des Probabilismus und der jesuitischen Theologie und in seinem Orden als Reformator beargwöhnt und scharf beobachtet, konnte er, so lange die Gesellschaft bestand, nicht aufkommen und erst die Aufhebung der Gesellschaft brachte auch ihm Erlösung."
