Various formats and some mailed in envelopes, nearly all addressed to curator Judith Cahen. Amsterdam: November 1976-December 1980. Founded in November 1976, Stempelplaats was an artist-run space in Amsterdam dedicated to stamp art and rubber stamps. It opened with the support of the storied stamp store Posthumus, at St. Luciensteeg 25. Aart van Barneveld assumed leadership of the space by September 1977, and organized a large number of exhibitions, performances, and editions there. Similar in spirit to In-Out Center and Other Books and So, Stempelplaats was a non-commercial organization by artists for artists, concerned with the distribution and appreciation of marginal art forms, particularly correspondence and stamp art. The present collection provides an important overview of this understudied space through invitation cards and postcards for exhibitions staged at the venue. For example, the first invitation (no. 1) comes in the form of an empty stamped and mailed envelope which has been hand-addressed by Van Barneveld. All of the pieces in this collection are in fine condition. A full list is available on request.
