Seiziémiste de formation, il fut aussi un spécialiste reconnu de Stendhal, donnant plusieurs éditions critiques de ses ?uvres, participant à un grand nombre de colloques, produisant une impressionnante quantité d'articles. La ville de Montpellier garde vif le souvenir du Professeur Pierre Jourda ; dans le quartier des Beaux-Arts, une rue porte son nom. La relation d'amitié entre ces deux beylistes de premier ordre que furent Henri Martineau et Pierre Jourda, dura de 1928 à 1958, année de la mort de Martineau. Dans le volume " Hommage à Henri Martineau " qui constitue le dernier numéro de la revue Le Divan, Pierre Jourda évoque leur première rencontre - et ses nombreuses suites - dans la librairie du Divan, qui longtemps exista à l'angle des rues Bonaparte et de l'Abbaye (Paris VIe). Édition originale de ce texte écrit à quatre mains et publié sous le nom de Constantin seul. Stendhal surnommait cet ami proche "Tantin", "Tantincons" ou encore "Constantin Porcelaine", en référence à son activité. Ils furent compagnons au cours du long séjour italien de Beyle commencé en 1836. La part des deux auteurs est désormais bien établie, grâce aux travaux de Sandra Teroni et Hélène de Jacquelot, publiés en préface de la réédition des Idées italiennes (Paris, Beaux-Arts de Paris, 2013). Plusieurs observations ajoutées par Stendhal sont parfois empruntées aux Promenades dans Rome ou à l'Histoire de la peinture en Italie.
