Add to basketMabel E. Step (illustrator). Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 176pp including Index. Wayside and Woodland Blossoms (subtitled: "A Pocket Guide to the British Wild Flowers" with coloured figures of 127 species by Mabel E. Step. (First Series), published by Frederick Warne & Co Ltd [1909] - This copy has no date. However it must be from before 1917 because in that year Frederick Warne & Co became a limited company and George Sellick died. Wayside and Woodland Blossoms;' describes itself as 'A Pocket Guide to British Wild Flowers.' The book contains; 'Coloured Figures of 127 species' by Mabel E Step. The book also has detailed descriptions of 366 species of British Wild-Flowers. By Edward Step, Author Of "By Vocal Woods And' Waters," "By Seashore, Wood And Moorland". From the Preface: The purpose of this volume is to assist a very large and increasing class of persons who possess a strong love of flowers, but to whom the ordinary "Floras" - indispensable as they are to the scientific botanist - are as books written in an unknown tongue. With the enormous increase of our town populations, and the greater facilities for home travel, there has grown up a truer appreciation of the country and of all that is beautiful in nature ; and it is hoped that this work may be of service to those who thus steal back to the arms of their Mother, but have not time or inclination to spell out and painfully translate the carefully-made terms of the exact descriptions which learned men have written for the use of the scientific student. Such terms are absolutely necessary, for the things they describe were unknown to our Celtic and Saxon forefathers, who would otherwise have left us names for them which would now be familiar words to all. In a work like the present such words could not be entirely avoided, but they have been used sparingly, and in a manner that will not involve continual reference to a dictionary of scientific terms. An excellent early copy in the popular Wayside and Woodland series, as useful and beautiful now as it was when it was first published. The pages are slightly age toned - no detriment to coloured plates or text. Decorative printed end papers. Pastedown has a small previous booksellers sticker (Foyles) to bottom left. Tightly bound. The boards are finished in rich burgundy leatherette with crisp gilt and black detailing, spine has gilt lettering and black decoration. The spine is slightly bumped to head and tail. Head has a few small closed tears. Gilt top to text block. Prize winning certificated dated 1928 to reverse of FEP. Additional photographs are available upon request.
