Contact seller3-star sellerFIRST EDITION. 215 x 135 mm. (8 3/8 x 5 3/8"). 2 p.l., [9]-96 pp. (complete). Original gray printed paper boards, upper cover with a large illustration by Will Bradley, smooth spine with printed paper label, edges untrimmed. Housed in a black cloth folding box with paper label on spine (label slightly rubbed). Illustrated title,… six full-page illustrations, and 16 small illustrations by Will Bradley. A hint of wear at head of lower joint, a couple of trivial scuffs, but QUITE A FINE COPY, with almost no signs of use. This memorably titled work contains a collection of poetry by the author of "The Red Badge of Courage," beautifully illustrated by a highly successful illustrator and graphic designer nicknamed the "American Beardsley." A contemporary of Joseph Conrad and H. G. Wells, and one of the outstanding writers of his generation, Steven Crane (1871-1900) is credited with influencing Ernest Hemingway and the Modernist movement of the mid-20th century. Although he is best known for "Red Badge," his classic Civil War novel, Crane was also a short story writer, journalist, and poet. The present work is one of two books of poetry Crane published during his lifetime, following "The Black Riders and Other Lines" of 1895. According to ANB, Crane thought his poetry "best expressed his leading ideas about life as a whole, in contrast with 'The Red Badge of Courage,' which he termed 'a mere episode.' Variously received at first, the poems deploy, with a surprising degree of technical resourcefulness, perspectives that shift with whatever narrative, expository, or lyric locus Crane chose to adopt at a given time; they resemble his mature writings in prose." Printed on gray paper, the present edition contains lyrical Art Nouveau illustrations by Will H. Bradley (1868-1962), who was highly regarded for his magazine covers and poster designs. A largely self-taught artist, Bradley employed strong lines and intricate patterns that are reminiscent of Japanese wood block printing, and his work is often compared to that of English artist Aubrey Beardsley. Copies of this work appear on the market with regularity, but the covers are often in unappealing condition. Thankfully, the present copy has sustained minimal wear, thanks to the bespoke box that houses it.
