About the book >.>.> The publication of the The Atlas of Breeding Birds in Britain and Ireland (Sharrock 1976) prompted many local ornithological societies and bi…rd clubs to look with a more analytical eye at the distribution and abundance of their local breeding birds. This process was given a considerable boost by the survey work undertaken for the 'New Atlas' between 1988 and 1991. The Durham Bird Club, like a number of similar organisations, used this work as a launch pad to undertake a more detailed study of its local bird populations. Key to the production of this Atlas has been the use of the Recorder (Ball 1994) database, developed by the Joint Nature Conservation Committee, to interpret and map the data collected, and the support received by the Durham Bird Club during this process from the Tyne and Wear Museums Service.
