Paperback. Condition: Near Fine. Book. Complete set of Stephen Willats' seminal periodical 'Control'. First 5 issues: 310 x 225 mm with screenprinted wrappers. Later issues have printed pictorial wrappers and are slightly smaller in format. Since 1965, this pioneering conceptual art magazine has published original artwork and writing from over 150 artists, alongside collectives and collaboratives such as Artists Placement Group. Issue 13 features an original work by Anish Kapoor of an insect-object sprayed blue; together with a photocopy collage intervention by Glenys Johnson entitled Agent Orange. Issue 3 comes complete with inserts: Poem-Blanc by John Sharkey and Peter Upward's untitled painting. This seminal publication is significant for its community-based approach, and its theories based on cybernetics and social science. Its content rejected a traditional mode of criticism and instead concentrated on theoretical ideas, technical models and artistic methods: Control is purely a magazine of art theory, in the sense that it presented text by artists looking at the thinking behind their work (Willats, Publishing Interventions, 2 in In Numbers: Serial Publications by artists since 1955, PPP Editions, Zurich, 1999, p. 129). While within the remit of the art magazine, Control is notable for its interdisciplinary reach. As the artist has commented, the magazine's origins were a reaction to a very strong inheritance from previous decades that constrained the artists into very set roles of painting, sculpture and traditional mediums (ibid). 'Eleven' is a rare issue from the Control Magazine series - quite difficult to find. Condition: some minor wear to cover, insides clean and no tears. Overall: Fine.

Gallery House Press, London. 291 x 210mm. 42pp. Perfect bound book, printed black on white stock, featuring 'three independent exhibitions and a small series of lectures' from Stephen Willats, Ian Parkinson, Michael Dye, David Medalla, John Dugger, Graham Stevens, Michael Upton, Jun Terra, Bill Lundberg, Roderick Coyne, and Stuart Brisley. Listings include photographs of exhibitions with image descriptions, printed lectures, and artist biographies printed as timelines. In her introduction, Rosetta Brooks posits, 'In presenting exhibitions under the title of 'avant-garde' it might suggest that I am affirming the usefulness of the concept and it might even be interpreted that there is a characteristic, common in all such work, which makes it avant-garde. This however is not my intention; much of the work in the exhibition is attempting to redefine the basis of art activity along less paradoxical lines and in accordance with a variety of conventions which have previously been alien to the activity.' Condition: foxing to covers, coffee ring stain to back cover and red biro note to back cover, internally near fine. No tears, poor cover, contents very good +/near fine. Overall very good.
