Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Cow is the story of a Spanish agricultural labourer, Ambrosio, who goes to Switzerland as a Gastarbeiter. He is bound for Innenwald, a village in the Swiss highlands, and the novel begins as he is about to spend a summer working for Farmer Knuchel. It ends in the abattoir of the neighbouring city, at the end of the seven hard years of labour that have destroyed him. There he sees Blosch, the once magnificent lead cow on Knuchel's farm, now a sad, condemned creature in the abattoir. Cow was acclaimed as a contemporary classic on first publication. Now more than ever it must be read as a book of archaic power about man, his work and his food and, most importantly, as a damning indictment of the relationship between man and the animal world. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Highly Praised 1st Novel About Cows & Dairy Workers. Translated from the German by Michael Hofman. 353 pages. hardcover. keywords: Europe Switzerland Literature Translated World Literature. DESCRIPTION - COW is a magnificent first novel, masterfully translated by Michael Hofmann, which happens to be about cows and dairy workers, but which transcends its immediate theme to become a powerful and moving piece of fiction about man, his work, and his food at the end of the twentieth century. Not since Herman Melville has an author so powerfully and intricately explored the life-and-death cycle of an animal preyed upon by man. From pasture to dairy to abattoir, Sterchi follows Blösch, the lead cow of farmer Knuchel's herd, describing in exquisite prose each detailglorious and stomach-turningof bovine existence. At the same time Sterchi creates a modern-day Ahab named Ambrosio a dark-skinned Spanish guest-worker in milk-white Switzerland, who is not pristine enough, according to the Swiss, to handle live cows, and who is thus relegated to cutting up dead ones. Starting with these two unlikely characters, Sterchi creates a monumental and important work of fiction about beasts and men, about how they prey upon each other and upon themselves. inventory #14043.
