From the publisher: "I'm a Stetson. My great, great grandfather was Charles Foster Stetson who was a descendant of Samuel Stetson who was a descendant (I think) of William Brewster who came to America from England on the Mayflower in 1620. My father was Harold Clifton Stetson, a descendant of Charles Foster Stetson. That's how I became a Tar Heel and a native of Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. I was born and lived in Kitty Hawk until I was seven and a half years old (1936-1944) and spent many summers there after that. A number of historic events took place in Kitty Hawk, the Outer Banks, and in the outside world, both before, during, and after I was born: The Lost Colony in Roanoke, the First Flight in Kitty Hawk, the Great Depression, WWII in my front yard (i.e., The Battle of the Atlantic, the longest continuous military campaign in World War II, from 1939 to the defeat of Nazi Germany in 1945, covering a major part of the naval history of World War II), a Camp Meeting in Manteo (a religious revival meeting that possibly was led by Billy Graham), and quite a few over-the-top hurricanes, all of which I have written about in Kitty Hawk and Me. In the 1930s, my family was among the first people who lived in Kitty Hawk Beach. That's why two streets are named after them: Hurdle Street (Nancy Emily Hurdle was my great grandmother), and White Avenue (Eva Hurdle White was my grandmother). Neither one of them did anything particularly notable; they just built and lived in two of the first houses on the beach. One of Eva's four children was my mother, Nannie Temperance White (also a descendant of a Mayflower passenger). Although I am 85 years old, my memories of my early childhood are vivid and my memories and research into the Outer Banks are detailed, interesting, and as accurate as I could make them.".
