Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. During the 1960s vehicle makers all over the world were looking to expand and amalgamate as a means of survival. As a major manufacturing nation Britain at the time had a large number of makers of all kinds of vehicles and gradually many of them joined together to form two large companies. The first was the Leyland Motor Corporation, principally involved with manufacturing commercial vehicles although they had also recently diversified into cars. The other major concern was British Motor Holdings, owners of some of Britain's iconic car makes including Austin, Morris, Wolseley and Riley to name but a few. With size meaning strength, and with government encouragement, these two companies merged in 1968 to form the British Leyland Motor Corporation, one of the largest vehicle making firms in the world. This publication looks at the histories of many of the companies that found themselves in this massive organisation, together with some of the products that they produced, the problems they faced and what happened to them in the end.Makes covered include Jaguar, Vanden Plas, Rover, Triumph, Mini, Alvis, AEC, Albion, Scammell etc, while it also looks at some of BL's more unusual products including gas turbines, miltary tanks, trains and fridges. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. First collected edition, first impression. Some very slight edge wear to top and bottom of jacket and spine, top corners very slightly rubbed, red titling on spine very slightly faded. Not price clipped (£14.95), no inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg++ copy. 500, illustrated. This trilogy tells how Ian Nicolson, yachtsman, naval architect and author, joined a Canadian and a Norwegian to sail the 45 foot ketch Maken from England via the Panama Canal to Vancouver, Canada. It goes on to describe how Ian returned home from Vancouver, how he hitch hiked his way between Canada¿s east and west coasts, via California, found the bare hull of a 30 foot 6 inch yacht in a shipyard at Chester, near Halifax, finished the building and rigging of her in a few weeks with his own hands and the help of the Stevens family and their small staff, and sailed her across the Atlantic ocean and up the Channel to Weymouth without stopping. It describes how Ian built the experimental ketch the St Mary with his wife Morag, and the help of their friends and neighbours, in Scotland and achieved racing success. In this masterful telling, with a wonderful economy of words, a modesty which will not deceive the experienced reader, and useful drawings of constructional and rigging details, Ian Nicolson brings the tales to life and takes his audience along with him on his fascinating adventures. Quite a scarce book. Jacket photo by Steve Pullen (illustrator).
