Numerous features of the ArmaLite Ar-18 were simply appropriated in the early 1970s for use in the pilot model of the 4.85mm bullpup "Enfield Weapon System" (EWS). In 1985 the still-unperfected 5.56mm SA80weapon system was adopted as the L85A1 Light Support Weapon (LSW), as modifications and trials continued. In 1988 H & K was awarded a controversial 92M British Pound contract to retrofit the SA80 to the A2 version - in Germany. The controversies continue. An excellent and comprehensive study.
