Surviving shipwreck, pursuit, and political intrigue in the Scottish Highlands, David fights to reclaim his inheritance and freedom. This mid-century edition captures the spirit of the tale for young readers with sturdy boards and timeless artwork, part of a beloved G&D series that introduced generations to literary classics. Jo Polseno (1924-2001)and became known for his distinctive illustrative work in mid-20th-century American publishing. He contributed to a number of children's and young reader classics, most notably for Grosset & Dunlap's Companion Library and similar educational or library-bound reprints. His style combined fine-art sensibility with accessibility - using confident brushwork and expressive composition to appeal to young readers while maintaining painterly quality. Polseno studied art in New York and later taught illustration and painting; he was long associated with the Rhode Island School of Design and the New England art community. Beyond book illustration, he produced murals, portraits, and landscapes, and was represented in exhibitions in the 1960s-1980s, particularly in New England galleries. While not a household name in illustration, Polseno is respected among collectors of mid-century juvenile editions for his dynamic, human-centered depictions and his ability to capture narrative emotion - especially in adventure classics like Kidnapped, Treasure Island, and Robinson Crusoe.
