Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. Discover the technical brilliance and intellectual daring of this Baroque painter whose artistry defied convention and expectation. Little is known about the early life of the Flemish Baroque painter Michaelina Wautier (1604-1689). She was born to an upper-class family in Mons, in present-day Belgium, and her complex, diverse body of work suggests a certain level of education and exposure to various artistic traditions. In the early 1640s she relocated to Brussels, following her elder brother, Charles, who was also an artist. There, the siblings lived together, sharing both a home and studio, and embarked on their respective careers. Wautier's catalogue includes a variety of subjects, from portraits and flower garlands to genre scenes and history paintings. Her talent was so impressive that four of her pieces found their way into the holdings of famed art collector Archduke Leopold Wilhelm of Austria. In this volume, author Katlijne Van der Stighelen explores the artistic culture of seventeenth-century Brussels and Antwerp to examine the forces and individuals that would have impacted Wautier. The wide variety of works that she left behind, including her exceptional painting The Triumph of Bacchus, demonstrates her advanced technical dexterity and highly individual iconographic choices. Michaelina Wautier explores the technical brilliance and intellectual audacity of a painter who is just beginning to be given her due. Softcover. Condition: NF. Color illustrated wraps, red spine. 400 pp. 308 color illustrations. A heavy book. In Dutch. Women Artists in Belgium and Netherlands 1500 -1950. Published on the occasion of the exhibition "Elck zijn waerom" held at the Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten, Antwerpen, 17.10.1999-16.01.2000 and the Museum voor Moderne Kunst Arnhem, 26.02.2000-04.06.2000. "Elck his 'why' was the title of the first exhibition of female artists in the Netherlands. The aim was to provide an overview of 500 years of female artists in the Netherlands and Belgium with over 300 works by 135 women: altarpieces, landscapes, still lifes, genre scenes, portraits, historical paintings and sculptures. The title of the exhibition was taken from the motto of Mary Tesselschade (1594-1649). You can read her motto as a confident call - Why? Why! - And behind that "why" is an unprecedented hidden world . because these artists deserve more attention than they have hitherto received, because female artists in the past were not taken seriously, and because many people after their death fell into oblivion. Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. Active in Brussels in the middle of the 17th century, Michaelina Wautier is now regarded as one of the foremost female artists of her time, although for many years her work was misattributed to her male contemporaries. Continually pushing boundaries as a female artist, Wautier exhibited an in-depth knowledge of classical mythology and was one of the first female painters to depict the male nude. Her body of work includes huge altarpieces, charming genre scenes and extraordinary flower garlands, as well as portraits and history paintings. In this book, the first illustrated monograph on the artist, leading Wautier expert Katlijne Van der Stighelen highlights Wautiers originality and the complexity of her oeuvre. Considering how Wautier navigated restricting gender norms to stake out a productive career as a painter, the author places her work in the context of other European artists, both female and male. Incorporating recently discovered biographical information, this volume offers a comprehensive and in-depth overview of Michaelina Wautiers life and work.
