A six sided letter giving his biography to the editor of Debretts, the Peerage Baronetage. An incredibly detailed account of his life and career. Lieutenant-General Sir Henry William Stisted 1817-1875, served as the first Lieutenant Governor of Ontario after Confederation, from 1867 to 1868. He was appointed Major General in 1864 and divisional commander of British forces in Canada in 1866 and appointed Lieutenant Governor of Ontario in June 1867. He was instrumental in opening up the northern part of the province for development. Size is 177mm x 114mm. Condition is good. Light folding crease. Light gum marks to edges. Le litografie sono opera del marito dell'Autrice, il Colonnello Stisted. Interessante testimonianza letteraria epistolare della profonda amicizia che, soprattutto nel XIX secolo, ha legato numerose famiglie inglesi alla Toscana, e in particolare ai Bagni di Lucca. La famiglia Stisted visse a lungo ai Bagni di Lucca, ospite a Villa Brodrick e la presente corrispondenza con Lady Knowles curata da Clotilda Elizabeth Stisted è una straordinaria documentazione di tale rapporto. Lady Knowles richiede all'amica notizie e informazioni per introdurre i figli allo studio della lingua e della cultura italiana, e Mrs.Stisted risponde con una lunga e ricchissima corrispondenza che si apre con una delicata dichiarazione d'amore verso il piccolo borgo toscano: "We love the fairest of lands, and would gladly pour out a tribute to the clime, where we have found comparative health, and enjoyed incomparable happiness during the last twelve years.". Segue una minuziosa descrizione dei luoghi, con occhio attento a fenomeni naturali e sociali , dalle inondazioni al gioco del "tiro della forma di formaggio". Quindi un'ampio percorso storico, da Plinio a Cesare, dai Longobardi alla Contessa Matilda, da Castruccio a Paolo Guinigi, dai Baciocchi e i Napoleonidi ai maggiori personaggi lucchesi della prima metà del XIX secolo. E ancora si parla di arte e si dettagliano minuziosamente i frequenti viaggi nelle vicine località di Volterra, Certaldo, San Gimignano, Poggibonsi, etc. 900 gr.
