Cloth. Condition: Fine. Near Fine. First Edition. Lavish pictorial survey of a modern artist who specialized in historic maritime painting, with sweeping panoramas of ships and boats on rivers, on open seas, in harbors, etc. in recreating the past, or as they would have looked in the nineteenth century into the early 20th century. Oblong folio, 31 by 40 cm. XIV, 209 pp. With nary a nod to the modernism of the day, the canvases have a sweep and grandeur that clearly draws on influences such as Winslow Homer, Currier and Ives, James Buttersfield, Robert Salmon, and numerous others who excelled at and were known for capturing the beauty of the waterways. Whatever one might think of Stobart's merit as an original graphic artist, we think Stobart can also be regarded as a maritime historian who imparted his bit of history in the most effective and accessible manner -- through illustration. He was meticulously devoted to historical accuracy, even if one might carry a suspicion that he was romanticizing and/or improving on the past in some way. Other than a few very faint spots along the lower edge of front board buckram, a Fine, clean, tight copy. The dust jacket had some edge wear, including a small chip, and more pronounced at spine extremities -- please look at photos. It also has a neat small triangular cut out, front flap, which we assume is a price clip. Still, given the unwieldiness of the book being that it is heavy and very oblong, we find this wear relatively trivial and so consider the dust jacket either very good plus or near fine. John Stobart (illustrator).…
