Condition: GOOD. First American edition. Stooke was a prolific British author in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, primarily known for children's literature and Christian-themed novels. In this story, Marigold, a cheerful and imaginative eleven-year-old girl, is sent by her impoverished widowed mother to live with her father's aunts, Miss Pamela and Miss Mary Holcroft, in Exeter, so that she will be able to obtain an education. Their world of wealth and luxury is very different from her previous life, leading to feelings of loneliness and a deep longing for her mother and brothers. Nevertheless, buoyed by her faith, she works to prove herself as a "good niece" to her aunts, who have very different personalities Miss Pamela is stern, while Miss Mary is kind but often tactless. Frontispiece illustration. Art nouveau binding of gray cloth with gilt lettering framed by dark green leaves and flower design. 223 pp. Good overall - some minor wear to the covers, and edges of the textblock, but a tight and sturdy copy.
