Il volume è dedicato allo straordinario dipinto di Leonardo da Vinci conservato al Louvre di Parigi e raffigurante San Giovanni Battista, in occasione del suo eccezionale arrivo a Milano.Il San Giova…nni Battista del Louvre è una delle opere più enigmatiche eseguite da Leonardo da Vinci e segna il culmine della sua produzione pittorica. Ci sono fondate ragioni per credere che esso sia il suo ultimo dipinto e che rappresenti una intera vita di ricerche sulla tecnica dello sfumato e sugli effetti di luce.Il quadro si trovava, già terminato, nello studio di Leonardo nel 1517 a Colux, in Francia, paese dove trascorse gli ultimi anni della sua vita. Questo dato ci permette di comprendere l'importanza dell'opera dalla quale il maestro per lungo tempo non volle separarsi. Fu esposta a Milano nel 1939 nella mostra dedicata a Leonardo, evento di grande rilevanza anche in considerazione della delicatezza del momento storico che l'Europa stava attraversando e da allora non è più tornata in Italia.In questi ultimi anni le tecniche di analisi dei dipinti hanno subito un'evoluzione sia dal punto di vista scientifico sia da quello metodologico e, anche grazie alla collaborazione con il Museo del Louvre, è possibile apprezzare i risultati di molte ricerche.
