Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. READ THOROUGHLY. Stated First Edition. So, this is one of the more bizarre things I've come across in a book. I've read reviews of this book stating that there are a tremendous number of typos. One person said you could find one on pretty much every…page. But he didn't mention what I'm finding which is that there are REPEATED pages, probably MISSING pages as well . It's bizarre and hilarious. After page 246 it goes back to 243, moves forward to a second 246 (which has the exact same words on it), then back to 239 which goes up to 242 and then 235 which goes to 238, then back to 231 up to 234 to 227 to 230. Are you getting the idea? Somehow goes all the way back down to 218, and then jumps to 279 which would suggest that there are pages missing? Does this make the book more or less valuable? Certainly makes it bizarre. I'll continue with the description nevertheless. You can see the covers in the photos. They're in very nice condition. The edges and corners are in very solid shape. Remarkably, there isn't any rubbing at the corners. The white design and the red lettering are both very bright. There is a small and thin white surface scratch on the rear cover. There's a slight bit of whitening off the top edge of the rear cover. The book is pretty solidly bound. The junctures between the illustrated inside covers and end papers, front and rear, are in excellent shape. There is a thin space over most of the juncture between the verso of the half-title page and blank verso of the frontispiece. The frontispiece has just a little bit of give if you pull it from the side, but it is not detached in any place along the juncture. There is a light, thin vertical crease on the title page and around 8 to 10 pages after that. It's pretty mild and was likely caused by something pressing against the pages. The pages are, in the main, very clean. Scrolling through, I found only a handful of inconspicuous spots. However, at the bottom of page 223 (only one of the 223's, I should say) which is the last page of a chapter, there are two black swirls of lines, fairly thick lines, below where the print ends. Not quite sure what would've created them, never saw anything like that, but I guess it fits. There is a lighter shadow of part of one of the two lines on the facing page at its margin. I also found a 1/2 a dozen or so bottom corners with a loss, all but one tiny, that one still small, all very far from the print. There isn't much by way of creasing. No markings. No attachments. No writing. You can see the jacket in the first few photos. I've always had it in a fitted protective cover. Looks like there's a thin tear off the rear bottom edge. There are small losses off the spine ends, extending a little bit onto the front and rear covers. The flaps have thin tucking-in clips, but the price is present and unaffected. The rear flap has a very thin loss off its top edge. The White Flag is described as an old-fashioned melodrama. It was serialized in Good Housekeeping magazine beginning in 1923, in advance of the book's release. Gene Stratton-Porter, was a Wabash County, Indiana, native who became a self-trained American author, nature photographer, and naturalist. In 1917 Stratton-Porter used her position and influence as a popular, well-known author to urge legislative support for the conservation of Limberlost Swamp and other wetlands in the state of Indiana. She was also a silent film-era producer who founded her own production company, Gene Stratton Porter Productions, in 1924. Stratton-Porter wrote several best-selling novels in addition to columns for national magazines, such as McCall's and Good Housekeeping, among others. Her novels have been translated into more than twenty languages, including Braille, and at their peak in the 1910s attracted an estimated 50 million readers. Eight of her novels, including A Girl of the Limberlost, were adapted into moving pictures. She was also the subject of a one-woman play, A Song of the Wilderness. Color Frontispiece by Lester Ralph (illustrator).
