Januar 1891 St.), der neben Johann Nepomuk Sepp als der bedeutendste Schüler von Joseph Görres gilt, studierte Theologie, Geschichte und besonders Philosophie. Er hörte mit Begeisterung die Vorlesungen von Baader, Görres und Schelling. Nach seinen Universitätsstudien trat er 1840 in das Klerikalseminar in Freising ein. 1841 wurde er zum Priester geweiht. Nach zwei Koadjutorstellen in Buchbach und Grüntegernbach erhielt der junge Priester 1843 die Erlaubnis zu wissenschaftlicher Fortbildung in München.
