First edition. A rare and fascinating fin-de-sià cle Italian medical-literary study examining the phenomenon of âstralunamento degli occhiâ â" literally, the ârollingâ or âmoon-struckâ turning of the eyes. Dr. E. Stuffler, a Modenese ophthalmologist, combines physiological, linguistic, and cultural perspectives on eye movement and facial expression, exploring the intersection between medical science, philology, and art. The bookâs seven chapters move from the philology of the phrase and literary recollections to scientific variations and artistic notes, ending with local physiological observations. Drawing on classical sources, Renaissance painters, and contemporary psychology (including Charles Bell, Duchenne, and Darwinâs Expression of the Emotions), Stuffler treats the act of stralunamento as both a medical symptom and a visual metaphor in art and literature. This unusual synthesis of medical aesthetics and cultural criticism reflects late-19th-century Italyâs fascination with physiognomy and emotional expression. Stufflerâs cross-disciplinary approach anticipates the convergence of neurology, art history, and semiotics in 20th-century thought. An appendix lists his other ophthalmologic papers published between 1890 and 1895, showing his active contribution to Italian medical scholarship.
