Condition: VG. 9pp extract, printed in double columns, illustrated with 8 characteristic Scribner engravings, salvaged from a damaged issue of Scribner's Monthly, Volume V, No. 1, November, 1872. The August, 1868, earthquake at Arica, Peru (now Chile) that generated catastrophic tsunamis throughout the Pacific Basin.… The towns of Arica, Arequipa, Moquegua, Mollendo, and Ilo were largely destroyed. In South America, more than 25,000 people were killed from the earthquake and tsunami. Illustrations include the U. S. steamer Wateree, a view of Arica before the quake, a native, a fruit - woman, a U. S. Officer's earthquake costume, a belle of Arica, confiscated mules, and a scene of skeletons cast up by the earthquake. Housed in protective mylar report cover. Very scarce.
