V tradicich nasi prozy…, predevsim venkovske, znamena stari vetsinou usmevnou dobrotivost, pochopeni pro lidske trapeni, porozumeni a nadhled, ochotu a potrebu pomoci. Ustredni postave romanu Valji Styblove se vsak prave techto vlastnosti nedostava: samotar a egoista, malicherny, prestizni, nezapre nekdejsiho berniho urednika. Ze sveho povolani prinesl si sedmdesatnik Skoumal chladny, necitlivy vztah k lidem (sam tomu rika "nezaujaty nazor"). Stale v nich vidi spis "uredni strany" nez sve blizni. I kdyz o nich hodne vi - vede v domove duchodcu kartoteku a kroniku -, prece jen zustava uzavren do sebe. Dba o sve zdravi a spravnou vyzivu, je pedanticky presny, ale take vypocitavy a sobecky. V jeho postave podala Styblova presny povahopis ceskeho malomestaka. Lec ani tohoto cloveka Styblova nezatratila, dala mu v zaveru dar pribuzenske zakotvenosti a moznost vykrocit k povahove obrode. V romanu upoutavaji i dalsi postavy a postavicky, jejich starosti i radosti. Kniha Na konci aleje dokazala z prostredi zdanlive pramalo atraktivniho vytezit dilo ctive, potrebne a myslenkove zavazne.
