ABOUT THIS BOOK: With Poets on the Peaks, writer-photographer John Suiter has created a literary portrait of Gary Snyder, Philip Whalen, and Jack Kerouac centered around their experiences as fire lookouts in the early 1950s. Featuring Suiter's evocative photographs of the peaks, fire lookouts, and mountain vistas, as well as numerous historical pictures, the book is also a photographic homage to the Cascadian landscape. Based on scores of previously unpublished letters, journals, and recent interviews with Gary Snyder, Philip Whalen, and others, Poets on the Peaks traces the early development of a community of poets, including the famous Six Gallery reading that took place in San Francisco in October of 1955. It contains cameos by fellow poets and mountain-climbers Allen Ginsberg, Kenneth Rexroth, Philip Lamantia and Michael McClure. It is also a book about Dharma and the years of Dharma Bums, from Snyder's 1951 road-side revelation in the Nevada desert that led him to drop out of academia and head for Japan, to Kerouac's lonely vigil with The Diamond Sutra on Desolation Peak, to Philip Whalen's ordination as a Zen priest.(Publisher). Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Near. First edition. A nice association copy, inscribed by Suiter on the half-title page with a mountain sketch: "For Polly Dyer, who helped conserves these mountains, Best wishes, John." Uncommon signed. Polly Dyer was an important conservationist in the Northwest, instrumental in the protection of O…lympic National Park and the formation of Northern Cascades National Park (she was a co-founder of the Northern Cascades Conservation Council). She also helped argue for Wilderness Act of 1964, testifying before the US Senate that wild places are "a priceless asset which all the dollars man can accumulate will not buy back."She and Howard Zahniser are mutually creditedwith the pivotal definition of wilderness as "an area where the earth and its community of life are untrammeled by man, where man himself is a visitor who does not remain."Her papersare held at the University of Washington. A nice association as such, as based on extensive archival research this book details the history of these seminal Beat writers as fire lookouts in the Northern Cascades. Illustrated beautifully by Suiter's photos. A fine book in a very near fine jacket.
