A good copy Focussing on the fall of Singapore this issue reports on the Japanese campaign to take the island and the British surrender in detail with numerous photographic illustrations. Other news includes Malaya and Dutch East Indies campaigns and Japanese support for independence movements in Burma. Reports on New Britain and Kavieng, which fell to the Japanese troops in January 1942 are also included. Sound copy. This issue of Sunday Mainichi was published on 1 February 1942. It covers the Japanese military thrusts in Southeast Asia, including into the Philippines and Malaya. Both the Fall of Manila and the military advance into Malaya are reported with several photographic illustrations. A double page pictorial bird's-eye map of Singapore shows the location of airfields, oil tanks and military bases as the immediate target of the next Japanese attack. Interestingly, an article on colonial soldiers covers the ANZAC and Indian soldiers during WW1 and speculates on their possible contributions in the Second World War. Colour folding map, scale 1:11000000, 77 x 109cm. Some minor wear and small holes at folds, a little soiling on reverse, a very good copy. This large colour map was published in 1940 and covers India to the southwest and Aleutian Islands to the northeast. To the south, the map shows New Guinea and the northern end of Australia. Territories of the Japanese Empire are enclosed in red border lines while other Asian regions and colonies are coloured according to their suzerains. Of interest is the close attention given to the internal borders of China, which appear to follow an odd hybrid of the old Qing period divisions and the Republican provinces that superseded them, rather than any actual zones of control - Xinjiang and Tibet, though under Chinese sovereignty, are marked as less firmly so than territories to their east. As the map predates the Soviet-Japanese Neutrality Pact, both Mongolia and Tuva are still marked as under nominal Chinese sovereignty with growing Russian influence. Typical for the period, Arunachal Pradesh is marked as Chinese, rather than Indian, territory.…
