Het verwijderen van waas uit beelden is dus een noodzakelijk en veelgevraagd gebied in de beeldverwerking. De grote hoeveelheden van deze zwevende deeltjes in de atmosfeer veroorzaken verstrooiing van licht voordat het de camera bereikt, wat de beeldkwaliteit buitenshuis aantast. Nevel verzwakt het gereflecteerde licht van de scènes en vermengt het met het toegevoegde licht in de atmosfeer.
